Ray bought it off a lot two counties over in 1974 for eight hundred dollars and a handshake, and drove it home with the radio broken and the heater stuck on high. For twenty years it was just the car. It hauled plywood, it took the kids to the lake, and it sat two winters under a tarp behind the barn when money was thin. The rust started at the rear quarters, the way it always does up here, and by 1996 it had stopped being something you drove and started being something you meant to get to. Danny got to it. He was nineteen when his father died and thirty-one when he finally pulled the tarp off, and it took another ten years of weekends. The block came out on a chain hoist in his mother's garage. The quarters were cut and welded by a man two towns over who would only take payment in venison. The paint is not correct and Danny will tell you so, at length. It is a shade too warm, because it is the shade he remembers from the driveway. It runs. It goes to two shows a year, and to the cemetery on his father's birthday. His daughter has already asked for it.

Danny, your father would have hated those wheels and loved every other inch of it.
I was there the day it came off the trailer. Longest ten years of weekends I ever watched somebody put in.
