Captain Dale Merrick

Thirty-eight years, volunteer, and he never once missed the whistle for a structure fire in the village. Dale joined at twenty-two because his father was in it, and stayed because of the people. He made captain in 1994. He ran the Saturday morning drills everybody complained about and everybody came to, and he taught roughly half the current department how to throw a ladder. He was at the Hartley farm in 1989 and he did not talk about it. He was out on the state road in 2003 and he did not talk about that either. What he would talk about is the pancake breakfast, which he chaired for twenty-one years, and the fact that it has brought in more for the department than any grant ever has. He turned in his gear in 2016 and came to every drill after that anyway. The engine led the procession.

He taught me to throw a ladder when I was nineteen and terrified. Never raised his voice once.

Twenty-one years of that pancake breakfast and I never once saw him sit down at it.
