Room 12, second floor, the one with the radiator that banged. Mrs. Dolan taught fourth grade at Ashbury Central for thirty-eight years. That is somewhere near nine hundred children, which in a town this size is most of the town. If you grew up here, there is a good chance she taught you, and a better chance she taught your mother. She kept a shoebox of index cards, one for each child, and on each one she wrote something true about them. Not a grade. She handed them out with the graduating class every June, twelve years after she had written them. People still have them in drawers. A man of forty-five read his out loud at her retirement and could not finish it. She did not want a party. She got one anyway, in the gym, and the line went out to the parking lot.
